Denim is the perfect fabric for busy, modern life. It’s hard wearing, easy to launder (does anyone actually iron denim??) and goes with pretty much everything. We all own at least one pair of much loved jeans, but this spring sees denim get a little more interesting, moving a step beyond its role as a wardrobe staple to a trend in its own right. Sonia Rykiel, Gucci, Stella McCartney and Chloe all featured denim as a key look in their collections, with shirt-dresses, maxi skirts, catsuits and dungarees given a seventies bohemian vibe.

I already have a vintage Gloria Vanderbilt pencil skirt which I love, but I’ve got my beady eye on a couple of new denim pieces. It’s not often catwalk trends truly translate well into ‘real’ life but this is a look that could work for pretty much every purse and lifestyle. Tailored pieces like the Miss Selfridge shirt-dress (see below) are equally perfect for office-wear or dressed down with trainers for weekends with the kids.
I love this maxi dress by Mango £69.99
and this zip fronted midi skirt by Whistles (£135), which is in pole position on my shopping list.
