Leading the model pack at Burberry’s AW14 show, Cara Delevingne, swathed in Christopher Bailey’s iconic monogrammed blanket coat instantly created the image of the season. All very well you say, but how does this work for me? Refreshingly for a key look this style is also surprisingly practical, and works well on many levels, even the school run. I kid you not…
The blanket coat is perfect for mums and mums-to-be, especially in the occasionally nippy months of autumn when you’re not quite ready for anything too heavy duty. Struggling to vacate the house with two children, a scooter and a buggy, you can just throw one of these beauties over your jeans or joggers and you’re instantly school run ready, with no fiddly buttons to slow you down, clocking up fashion brownie points as you go.
The more drapey versions are perfect as a breastfeeding cover up (see Wallis below) and the flowing shape disguises any post-baby wobble. Pregnant? This style will easily accommodate your growing bump, so no need to fork out on a maternity coat with limited lifespan.
I’m not suggesting you squander your hard earned pennies on Burberry, god forbid the dry cleaning bill for a start, so here my favourite high street versions. If you need something more tailored for the office, look for a sleeker cut, like this windowpane check number by Topshop.
Stylish, under £100 and, most importantly, COSY. Breathe a sigh of relief. Fashion is firmly on our side this Autumn.
